Brooklyn and the elevated railways

If it wasn’t next to Manhattan, Brooklyn would be still an interesting town to visit, with its own central park, Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum of Art and some nice neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights.

An unusual recommendation would be to take Subway line J in Manhattan towards Jamaica Center in Brooklyn. The line leaves Manhattan with an impressive fly over the East River by means of the Williamsburg Bridge, and crosses Brooklyn elevated in the middle of Brooklyn's Broadway and Jamaica avenues. In the XIXth and early XXth Centuries, Manhattan was also full of elevated metropolitan railways, the "els", but most of these lines were made underground, and now only some of them can be seen, far away from affluent downtown and midtown Manhattan.

Traveling in a metro car on a noisy old steel viaduct, few meters away from the windows of the flats were people are living, over a street were cars run and pedestrians walk, is an unusual experience, worth to understand real life of many working class new Yorkers. Furthermore, line J has a connection with the modern and driverless skytrain line that gives service to all terminals of JFK Airport, so it is an interesting mean of transportation from Manhattan to JFK.
