Olympic Port

Olympic Port

Barcelona's Olympic Port was built due to the celebration of the 25th Olympic Games that took place in Barcelona in 1992. It is a port with large capacity and allowed to host a considerable number of vessels for sailing mode tests which were held with the Olympic Games. After the Olympic Games of 1992, the port has become an entertainment area with restaurants, bars, clubs, a casino and others. The Olympic Port is located in the Olympic village, in the district of Sant Marti.

There is a municipal centre in the port, which is also a nautical school. This is where the training activities are managed and where people can learn the art of sailing.

Today the Olympic Port is still being an important tourist attraction in the city of Barcelona. The Barcelona World Race is a well-recognized activity of sailing boats.

Interesting places of the Olympic Port

The most famous buildings near the Olympic Port area are the impressive W Hotel, the Mapfre Tower and the Hotel Arts.

Mapfre Tower is occupied by offices of the insurance company and other companies like the Mondragon cooperative. Both buildings, Mapfre Town and Hotel Arts, are situated in the main entrance of the Port and are the first two skyscrapers in the city of Barcelona. In the Olympic port area there is also an interesting sculpture. This is named “el Peix d'Or” and was designed by Frank Gehry, who also designed the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao.

Other tourist attractions next to the Olympic port of Barcelona are the Casino of Barcelona (which is in the same place than Hotel Arts), the Barcelona Zoo and the Ciutadella Park where the architect Antoni Gaudí worked on its construction in the year 1888 for the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona.
