La Pedrera (casa Milà)

La Pedrera (casa Milà), by Antoni Gaudí

Well known as La Pedrera, Casa Milà was built by Antoni Gaudí in 1906, reflecting the Art of Modernism. It is located just ten minutes walking from Plaça Catalunya and it is in the middle of Passeig de Gràcia, one of the most transited streets for visitors in Barcelona.

Passeig de Gracia is full of Modernism symbols and buildings like Casa Batlló, casa Amatller or casa Lleó Morera, which were inhabited by the Catalan bourgeoisie along the nineteenth and twentieth century. Nowadays, these emblematic buildings can be visited for those interested in the architectonic Art of Modernism.

It is important to know that “Pedrera” means quarry, and it is due to the stone facade of Casa Milà that it is also known as La Pedrera.

In Passeig de Gràcia you can also find shops from the most popular brands in the world.

Inside La Pedrera

Early we realise the message of Gaudi in that building. The balconies are decorated with abstract silhouettes and plants made with iron. There are details in the front which remind of marine ornaments like waves of the sea, octopus, conch and others. There is no doubt it is the more naturalistic phase of the author.

Inside we found the dwellings, all with a lot of light and space decorated with wall paintings, some of them made by Aleix Clapés. These paintings are mythological themes of inspiration, as some scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Also, include other topics, such as the seven deadly sins and several episodes of "Life is a Dream", by Pedro Calderon de la Barca.

The roof

Towers, stairs and chimneys are on the roof of the building. Overlooking the city of Barcelona, there is an atmosphere of mystery in the universe of Gaudí. In fact, it is Modernism that allows us to have multiple interpretations.
